SCC Makes History with Two esports National Champions

The Southeast Community College esports team made history at the National Junior College Athletic Association esports National Championships on Thursday, April 24. Isaac Wheeler and Connor Oswald secured SCC's first-ever national championships in the Premier Series, the highest tier of competition offered by NJCAAe, the governing body for two-year college esports. Wheeler won the championship in Mario Kart while Oswald is the Street Fighter 6 champion.

"These championships represent a pivotal moment for our esports program," said Chris Cummins, SCC esports coach. "Isaac and Connor have demonstrated exceptional skill, dedication and sportsmanship throughout the season, and their achievements spotlight the growing excellence of competitive gaming at SCC."

Wheeler, a student in the GM ASEP program on the Milford campus, finished the regular season with an impressive 12-2 record and was the second seed in the playoffs. He went 4-0 in the postseason and defeated Marshalltown Community College in the championship match. Oswald is a business student on the Lincoln campus was also the No. 2 seed in the playoffs after finishing 13-2 in the regular season. He went 6-0 through the postseason, defeating Heartland College in the finals.

These individual triumphs highlight the strength of SCC's robust esports program, which featured over 83 members this season across more than 50 teams competing in 25+ different game titles in more than 300 matches. The program's diverse portfolio includes sports games like Madden, EA Sports FC, and Rocket League; first-person shooters such as Call of Duty, Overwatch 2, Valorant and Rainbow Six Siege; and strategy games including Hearthstone and Chess.
