October is Manufacturing Month and more than 200 students from Southeast Nebraska discovered dozens of careers in manufacturing and engineering through hands-on learning Wednesday, Oct. 26, at the Milford Campus at the Careers in Manufacturing and Engineering Technologies Day.

Participants spent the day learning from SCC students, faculty, and industry partners. Students saw first-hand the use of technology and the wide variety of opportunities available in the manufacturing and engineering technology fields.

Cayden Dunkhas and his dad, Gale, came out from Falls City to see what the day had to offer. They were specifically interested in the Nondestructive Testing Technology program, since they had a relative go through the program years ago.

“I want to explore different career opportunities,” Cayden said. “Sounds like it’s easy to get a job in the Nondestructive Testing field, though it is challenging.”

Jaylyn Bohling and her classmates came out from Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer High School to experience the day, she was specifically interested in the Welding program and was able to get some first-hand experience in the welding lab.

“I’ve already decided I’m going to be a welder,” she said.

Organizers hope this experience will allow students to begin thinking about a future career in one of the manufacturing and engineering fields, and give them a hands-on experience of what they can expect.

"Students enjoyed the hands-on experiences and learned a lot about opportunities in the manufacturing field," said organizer Kat Kreikemeier. "Events like these provide important exposure to the field and show students the possibilities for post-high school education and jobs."
