SCC to Host Information Sessions
Southeast Community College will hold information sessions in its 15-county service area to discuss its transition to a new funding model starting with the 2023-2024 budget. Funding for the state’s community colleges changed when LB 243 was signed into law by Gov. Jim Pillen on May 31. LB 243 allows the colleges to maintain their 2-cent levy authority for capital expenditures, but it replaces their General Fund levy authority with the Community College Future Fund beginning in 2024-2025.
“This historic legislation represents a powerful beginning to a proactive approach to investing in Nebraska community colleges to ensure they fulfill their missions to provide a skilled workforce and affordable access to higher education within their service areas,” said Dr. Paul Illich, SCC president.
LB 243 was the result of a collaborative partnership among the state senators, the community colleges, and the Governor’s Office. One of the challenges of the current funding model was that the largest revenue stream came from property tax. The CCFF alleviates this tension by replacing general-fund tax dollars with state funds and by creating a 100% tax credit for the transition year to encourage the utilization of unused funds based on current and future needs.
College representatives will be hosting information sessions throughout the 15-county region to explain LB 243 and how the new funding model will affect taxpayers in the future. Taxpayers can receive a tax credit equal to 100% of community college taxes paid in 2023-24 and beyond, facilitating the transition to the new funding model.
Information sessions will be held on the following dates from 6:30-7:30 p.m. unless noted at these locations:

- Aug. 1: Hebron Learning Center
- Aug. 2: Nebraska City Learning Center
- Aug. 7: Plattsmouth Learning Center
- Aug. 8: Seward Civic Center
- Aug. 9: Crete Library from 6-7 p.m.
- Aug. 14: Wahoo Learning Center
- Aug. 15: Auburn Memorial Library
- Aug. 16: Milford Campus
- Aug. 21: Lincoln Campus
- Aug. 22: Falls City Learning Center
- Aug. 23: Beatrice Campus
Southeast Community College was established on July 1, 1973, when a statewide community college system was implemented by the Nebraska Legislature. SCC serves a 15-county region with campuses in Beatrice, Lincoln and Milford as well as Learning Centers in Falls City, Hebron, Nebraska City, Plattsmouth, Wahoo, and York. The College offers more than 80 career/technical and academic transfer programs, as well education opportunities for lifelong learners, professional development, dual-credit for high school students, and GED/ESL classes. SCC is governed by an 11-member Board of Governors and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
